When I awoke at 6 AM and looked out my bedroom window, it was foggy to the point most of the trees were obscured on the mountainside. When I got up at 8:30, it had cleared and the sun was shining through a broken cloud cover. By 10 O’clock, the sky became black and by noon it was raining. It looks like I got the front 40 mowed just in time. I am glad for the rain, as the mountainside near me is turning brown.
NWS is predicting heavy thunderstorms for the next several days, and there is a Hazardous Weather Outlook warning for heavy rain and strong winds for today and tomorrow. The predicted high temperatures are in the mid to low 50s, with lows in the high 40s to low 50s, and by Sunday, warming back into the 70s. This should help the fire danger if the lightning strikes don’t set off any fires.
I spent the morning on the computer and doing three loads of wash. I was going to finish spraying and maybe work on the road today, but due to the rain, I think I’ll busy myself with working indoors for the day.
At one O’clock, the rain stopped long enough to give Zack some exercise. On the first throw of his disc, he picked it up with some grass and began shaking it, which is something he enjoys doing but ruins the $22.00 disc, so I yelled at him and in doing so scared one of the largest bull moose I’ve ever seen from the creek bed. Zack had alert to something in the creek bed earlier, but due to all the willow brush I couldn’t see anything. It may have been the moose grazing and I just couldn’t see it.
The moose took off at a full run and up the mountain into the forest, so I didn’t have time to grab my camera and get a shot. He had a huge rack and long dewlap, which is the loose skin that hangs from their chin. I believe that he may be the resident male that I spot every year, but he is usually seen with his mate, unless she stayed hidden I didn’t see her. I hope that he will remain in the area as I really enjoy seeing such a massive animal in the wild. I have had deer at my mineral licks almost every morning and afternoon, but haven’t seen any elk yet this summer. When Zack and I came off the mountain from our hike to the peak, I saw droppings of elk, but that is all.
Computer work, cleaning, and research, with Zack’s playtime inbetween, consumed most of the day. I finished the evening with a shower and nice dinner before going to bed at 11 PM.

Tuesday, August 4, 2009
It looked like it would be a nice day, but then it became overcast and looked like rain. No indications from NWS or my barometer, so maybe it is just something that will blow through. It is windy, versus breezy, this morning and if it continues, it will be good weather for outdoor chores, except for spraying.
My plan was to work on the road, but first I needed to change the oil in the small generator so I could charge the batteries later. Once that was done, I decided to work on the trail mower so it would be ready when I got around to mowing the front 40. After jacking up the deck to gain better access to the underside, I realized what needed to be done, made the necessary adjustment, and reattached the lock nut to the bottom of the adjusting screw.
Because I had to detach the mower from the Argo and the wind had died down, I decided to use the Argo to spray the weeds along the road as far as I could. I have a 30-gallon spray tank in the Argo, but as of right now, I don’t have the irrigation pump hooked up and the water source is shallow, so can’t really use it. I managed to spray all the weeds on the right side of the road as far as the cattle guard, which is the dividing line between the National Forest and BLM land. This too, took me off the road and into the meadow areas to make sure I got all of the weeds. A couple of the Canadian Thistle had already bloomed and gone to seed, which is unfortunate, but nothing I could do about it. The Houndstongue, Musk Thistle and knapweed are just starting to bloom, so I had to search for them. Almost anything that has thorns is a noxious weed and needs to be eliminated.
I almost made it to the cattle guard before running out of spray, so I headed back to the cabin. The wind was picking up again, so I decided to wait for calmer weather to finish spraying. I rested and had another Gator Aid and then hooked the trail mower to the Argo and started mowing. Because of the bumpy terrain, I needed to go slow so it took a lot longer to mow than I thought it would. I mowed from the road in front of my place all of the way to the cabin before the trail mower ran out of gas. I had the portions on either side of the cabin to finish, so I filled the gas tank and continued until it was done. I decided to see how well the mower might work at mowing down the willow brush, so I took it into the creek bed and started mowing.
The engine stalled a couple of times and I had to adjust the blades to a higher level, but other than that, it worked fairly well. I mowed a couple of strips at the bottom of the grade and then took it across the creek to a grassy area that needs to be mowed. The mower stalled again and due to the lateness of the day, I decided to call it quits and left the Argo and trail mower in the creek bottom.
I hiked up to the cabin and a very anxious Zack, who had been waiting patiently to play. He knows that when I am spraying or mowing, he is to stay in the cabin and away from what I am doing. He also does that if I am cutting wood, which is a really good thing, as I can’t always keep an eye on him.
We played for a while and then I fed him and Zoey, took a long cool shower, fixed a drink and sat down to relax before having some dinner.

Although it is still cloudy, the morning is warmer and I am hopeful that it is a forecast of things to come. The high temperature for the past few days has been in the mid to high 80s, in the direct sun. I’ve had a nice breeze that has helped make it feel cooler, for which I am thankful.
My usual morning routine ran into the afternoon as I continue my research on solar panels and trying to keep myself informed about what is going on in the world and in particular with our country. One web site always leads to another and before you know it, you have spent several hours and only accomplish questioning all that you thought you knew. It is a never-ending struggle to understand the full depth of how our government can spend so much money for what seems to be frivolous items. In the FEMA budget , there was an expenditure of for 15 MILLION dollars for “Stone Garden” in 2007 (00.15 StoneGarden...15). No explanation anywhere on exactly what that was. Maybe it was a code name for some black bag operation.
By 2 PM, I had finished and changed into my work clothes and headed out to accomplish something. I was going to work on the road, but needed to take some plywood over to the cattle guard so the dozer tracks didn’t destroy it. The Argo was still hooked up to the trail mower, so I hauled things over to the dozer, which is still parked on the other side of the creek, in the Jeep. I filled my 3-gallon spray tank to spray the thistle along the road and hauled it with me.
When I got to the dozer, I began spraying and once I was finished with the immediate roadside, I notice more a short ways away. Well, one led to another and another and after 6-gallons of spray, I still hadn’t gotten all of them. I had hiked a couple of hundred yards off the road and was worn out from lugging that spray tank back and forth. The sun was ducking behind the mountain, so I decided the rest of the weeds could wait until tomorrow.
After playing with Zack and resting enough to regain some strength, I showered and then relaxed before having some dinner and taking it easy the remainder of the evening.

Sunday, August 2, 2009
It was cool last night and I slept very well. I needed to make up for my poor nights sleep from the night before, so I didn’t get up until 10 AM.
Although there were a few clouds, it was relatively clear and sunny. The wind was blowing, but lightly inbetween the gusts, so as it became warmer, it felt good to open the doors and windows and let the breeze blow through.
I was able to get online and when I checked, I wasn’t slowed down under the FAP like yesterday, so that was some fluke probably caused by Hughes and had nothing to do with my equipment or usage. I still had a yellow blinking light on my Airport, but managed to remove all the previous settings and reset it as if it were new. This turned the light to green and allowed me access to my mail program and a relative fast download speed for a Sunday.
I managed to collect and correspond with several people regarding their earlier emails, and then began doing some research online. I have found that I can order all of the supplements that I use in Zack’s dinners online, cheaper than buying them in town, so ordered them. I also watched some videos and read some more reports about the Obama care health plan and the immunization plans overseas. I put together a separate email with links on all of that, which I’ll send later for those that are interested in it.
It is now 4:30 PM, and besides playing with Zack, fixing and eating a nice brunch, and a bit more cleaning, I haven’t done much else. I have been trying to get all of my data backed up on my external drive, after yesterday’s problems, but found I didn’t have enough room on the external drive. I had to update the software for it and then reformat the drive to give me the necessary room, plus I have the new Time Machine backup program on this newest system, so had to read all of the information about it before trying to use it. It is backing up my data as I write this, so I am hoping all my data will now be safely stored on the external drive if I need it.
Zack is begging to play again and it is close enough to his dinnertime that I’ll stop and deal with him, sending the update as it currently is. If any exciting things happen between now and bedtime, like a UFO landing in the yard, I’ll include it in tomorrows update.

Saturday, August 1, 2009
It is a bit cloudy and cool this morning, but I am hoping it will clear and warm up as it did yesterday. NWS is saying it is to be warm and a zero chance of rain, but then they don’t actually have a weather station at my location. Their forecasts are predicated on data gathered in Great Falls, so I take it with a grain of salt and hope they are in the ballpark.
My day started off poorly as I had a lousy nights sleep, tossing and turning with leg pains and a general sense of not being able to relax. After about an hour of that, an Alka-Seltzer and walk around the cabin, and I was able to get some sleep.
After getting up, I made my coffee and turned on my modem to sit down and read my emails and do my usually morning routine. Good plan, but it wasn’t going to happen. Everything on the computer was taking forever and some things, like my mail program, never opened at all. I double checked all my connections and settings and decided to restart the computer after I emptied my cache and trash.
When I restarted the computer, it didn’t recognize my wireless Airport, so I reset it and restarted the modem again. It didn’t help, so I took my laptop to the modem, which is in my dining area, and connected it directly using the cable. I still had no internet connection. I reset and restarted everything and when that didn’t help, I switched to my old Airport. Nothing I did seemed to help, so I shut everything off and had breakfast.
After playtime with Zack and a general picking up of papers and moving them from one place to another, I turned the modem and computer on to see if I could get a connection. When all was up and running, the light on my Airport wireless was blinking orange, not a steady green as it should be. I was able to open Firefox, but loading a simple 1:02 video took 8 minutes. At first I blamed the weather, but then thought to check my FAP setting. Sure enough, it was amber, not green. A check of the site showed I had exceeded my download limits, but I knew I hadn’t as I couldn’t even get online. It was also amber instead of the usual red for exceeding FAP limits.
The whole thing pissed me off so I decided that rather than fight with it; I would just spend my time doing other things. I shut everything off and began cleaning. I started to clear a few papers from my dining table, which is where paid bills, receipts, and important papers get laid until I can properly file them. Well, as you know, one thing leads to another and I ended up spending the majority of the day filing and going through files, throwing useless (which are few as I keep everything) papers away.
This task, plus taking breaks to play with Zack and moving around to keep from getting too stiff, took up the entire afternoon. At 7 PM, I played one last time with Zack and then fed him and Zoey their dinner. I took a shower and then roasted a game hen for dinner.
My evening went pretty much as usual until at 10:30 PM, a large truck slowly drove by the cabin, coming from the Dog Creek area. Usually people travel in the opposite direction because not many know how to get to the old logging bridge over Dog Creek. It stopped, just out of sight, behind my garage, so I turned Zack loose to let him bark, letting who ever it was know that someone was home and watching. With just the sunroom lamp on, and the reflection of television, they may have thought no one was home.
After Zack barked a few times they moved on. It was too dark to get a description of the truck or any occupants, but before they were out of ear shot, I fired a gun a couple of times to let them, and anyone else know, they would be up against an armed individual if they tried something.
I am usually not paranoid about occasional vehicles coming by, but that late at night and stopping near my garage, made me think that they may have been up to no good, so a couple of shots might make them think twice.
I finished watching a pre-recorded television program, the one I mentioned before - The Colony, and then went to bed.

Friday, July 31, 2009
It rained much of the night and into the morning, leaving about a quarter of an inch of new rain. It stayed cloudy and cold all morning, with the outside temperature hanging in the low 50s. I built a fire and read until noon, and then had a bite to eat.
Zack and I played outside, by 1:30 the sun broke through, and it began to warm up. Although the clouds were ever present, it turned into a nice day. I decided to clean the cabin in preparation for a BBQ that I invited my friend, Marcy, and her family to. She works in the Safeway Pharmacy and is one of those outgoing, always happy people that remembers everyone’s name and greets them whenever they are around. She was my inside connection to get my refills while I was snow birding last winter. I would just call and ask for her, tell her what I needed and the address to send them and she took care of the rest.
I have been trying to get her and her husband to just take a Sunday drive and come up my way to see the beauty I live with everyday, but she is always so busy with family, relatives and work, that she never makes it. I figured the sure way to get them up here is to have a BBQ for them and then they can’t back out.
Last week I made up an invitation and menu and gave it to her. She is to discuss the best day to come with her family and then let me know. I have a feeling it may be this next Sunday, or the one after it, so thought I’d better get this place in order.
I started in the sunroom, but when I took something to the dining area, I started cleaning there, but as I got a coke from the fridge, I started there and ended up cleaning out and organizing my kitchen drawers and then the entire kitchen. I’ve never said I wasn’t easily distracted.
By the time I finished the kitchen, it was 6 PM, so Zack and I played and then I fed him and Zoey before sitting down to work on the computer again. I finished up writing and posting previous updates, researching Zack’s food supplements, and watching a couple of videos and before I knew it, it was 8:30, so showered and ate some dinner before watching a program on television.

Thursday, July 30, 2009
Clear and sunny this morning, but still cooler than usual. There aren’t any clouds visible and the sun is warming things up (75 at noon), so I am hoping that this coming weekend will be a productive weekend for outside work.
I have my annual eye examination this afternoon, so Zack and I will head into town and probably won’t get much done around the cabin today.
Zack and I didn’t leave the cabin until almost 1:00, so went straight to the appointment. I found a shady spot to park and made sure Zack had fresh water, as the temperature was 74 degrees. I checked in and waited for about 5 minutes before being taken in and having all my personal data updated. The nurse then put me through all of the basic checks and tests, like reading the charts and checking to see if the prescription for my glasses had changed and checked my eye pressure then dilated my pupils in preparation for the doctor to check them.
I then sat in a waiting room while my eyes fully dilated, which was only about 5 minutes, and was called by the doctor to an examination room. We chatted briefly and then he checked each eye carefully. He told me that he had never ran across a case like mine where the floater moved and actually got smaller, but his exam revealed that it had. Both are good as the blood floating inside my eye is no longer directly in front of my pupil, and it is now smaller. For those of you that may not be aware, three years ago this summer (6-18-06), I had experienced a tear in the vitreous layer of my left eye, and that had caused some bleeding inside the eye, causing the spider web-like floater.
After the appointment, Zack and I drove to Safeway, did some shopping, and then picked up the mail and stop at Murrdoch’s to buy some dry dog food and more sunflower seeds for the birds and chipmunks. We arrived back home at 6 PM, where I played with Zack, fed him and Zoey, unloaded the car and put things away, made a drink and sat down to read my mail.
After finishing my mail, I showered and fixed myself dinner, relaxing for the remainder of the evening.
